Welcome to our new families and welcome back to our returning families. For me, the summer months have passed quickly and I am now excited for the school year to begin. It is wonderful to see so many athletes on campus with practices and scrimmages well underway. Last week I met with some of the student leaders to discuss this upcoming year and possible changes to make our little school a bit more student friendly. So, a number of good things are happening.

I thought it might be good for me to take a few moments and touch on several items before the start of school. Of course, as you would expect, I need to make some observations about the dress code. By now, at least the returning students are familiar with the code; and the new students can review it in the Student Handbook which can be found at the Rice web site. So I will not go through the code line by line. However, when students arrive Thursday morning for our first day of school, everyone is expected to be in uniform, clean shaven, and hair at the acceptable length.

Classes begin at 8:00 (Rice time) and students will not be allowed to enter their first period class after 8:00 without a pass from the office. Please plan your morning routine at home and drive time to be in compliance with our start time.

As a result of my conversations with last year’s AP/US History classes, we have moved the lunch period to earlier in the day. The lunch cycle will begin at the conclusion of Fifth Period. First lunch will run from 11:06-11:31 and second lunch from 11:50-12:15.

I strongly encourage students and parents to read the Student Handbook to gain a sense of the general rules and policies which govern our daily routines. If you have any questions or would like further clarification please call. By September 13th each family will need to return a signed copy of the Student/Parent Contract. You will find the Contract on the Rice web site. Students may leave the form with their first period teacher.

My door (actually doors with the two offices) is open so please feel free to stop and chat.

Let’s make it a great year,

Lloyd Hulburd

Rice Memorial High School Athletic Boosters

August, 2010

Dear Rice Parent,

The Rice school year is fast approaching and with that the beginning of fall sports. Rice Boosters are energized about the year ahead and the support they will provide Rice’s student / athletes.

Key elements of the Boosters are to support Rice Athletics through fundraising, coordination of volunteers in support of all teams, and assisting in the building of community through the involvement of parents. This year the Boosters hope to limit the amount of fundraising and focus on only a few key events, but we need your help.

At this time we are planning on the following:

Continued support of the concessions through the coordination of volunteers.

Sale of Rice logo attire at home events and through the Rice website.

The 2nd Annual Rice Calcutta in the spring of 2011.

A winter carnival to boost school and family spirit at Rice.

The Boosters do not plan to continue to ask our student /athletes to sell pizza, chocolates, coffee or like fundraisers this year; however, individual teams may continue to hold fundraisers for team activities. To accomplish this we are requesting that each family with a student/ athlete make a donation of $100.00*. The purpose of this is to assist in covering the athletic expenses at Rice. This is an annual request and will not be asked for again during this academic year.

The Rice Athletic Boosters are very excited about the 2010-11 year and look forward to supporting all the Rice teams and building a supportive community. Please visit the Booster section of the website for our meeting schedule and current information.

We thank you in advance for your donation of $100.00 to support your student/ athlete at Rice. Checks may be made payable to Rice Boosters, drop off at the school office or mail to Rice –Attention Lloyd Hulburd – 99 Proctor Avenue South Burlington, Vermont 05403. We hope to have all donations by September 30, 2010.

Please contact us if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for your support of our Rice athletes.

Sincerely,

Mike Lisa
